Dear NFCR Supporter,

There’s been a lot of buzz recently about red wine and its possible health benefits, but can it really help prevent cancer?

Though research is still in its early phases, studies have shown that because the antioxidant-rich skin of the grapes is left on during the process of making red wine, drinking it in moderation may, indeed, lower your risk of getting cancer.  The key is the antioxidants, not the alcohol.

Click here to learn about recommended red wine consumption and why grape juice and white wine may not be comparable alternatives.

Two Birds With One Stone:
The Power (and the Beauty) of Basic Cancer Research

Nature has its way of reminding those of us in the medical research field that, in spite of the labels we apply to them, all the systems in the human body are interconnected. Again and again, we have been surprised to find that a discovery in one area has led to an unexpected and exciting breakthrough in another.

Click here to learn how one of our NFCR scientists, Dr. Michael Sporn and his team of researchers at Dartmouth Medical School, found that a compound they were investigating for cancer could also be applied to fight another disease.

Healthy Living

Salmon Steaks with Grapefruit

Salmon is low in calories and saturated fat, yet high in protein, so it makes a great healthy choice for lunch or dinner.  Salmon also offers a unique type of health-promoting fat, the essential omega-3 fatty acids. The grapefruit complements the salmon in both taste and health benefits, since grapefruit is an excellent source of both vitamin C and lycopene, which research shows may help prevent cancer.  Click here for the recipe.

Candles for a Cure

Kevin Haley knows personally how cancer can change a family.  "Cancer will come into your life through the people you love and know. It will come in its own time and on its own terms. We can't just tell cancer, 'Come back later, we are busy.'  I personally wish I could tell that to my Dad's cancer, but I can't."  Instead, Kevin and his wife Tracie are using their family-owned business, Yankabilly Candles, to raise money for NFCR.  They are donating up to 45% of the proceeds from their "Candles for a Cure" sales to NFCR's life-saving cancer research.  Says Kevin, "Cancer has touched my life through my father. I have seen him have good times and bad times, and it is only because of research that he is still alive today."  To help support Kevin's fundraising efforts, click here.
