Dear AFCR Supporter,
Environmental Factors
Think of where you live, work and play, and what you do in these places, as your “environment.” Now, consider these elements as factors that impact your risk of cancer.
Researchers estimate that as many as 67% of cancer cases are linked to some type of environmental factor. Cancer can come from exposure to pollution – such as the air you breathe and the water you drink - or from many other factors such as diet, occupation, residence, or lifestyle choices such as smoking. Each of these environmental elements may add carcinogens that can increase your cancer risk.
Understanding which of these environmental factors are controllable and which are not is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. AFCR breaks down controllable ways to help prevent cancer in the “On Your Health” series. Click HERE to learn more.

Research Breakthroughs
A Window of Opportunity: Dr. Rakesh Jain

Cancer researcher Rakesh Jain, Ph.D., is on the verge of bringing a groundbreaking new treatment strategy to cancer patients who suffer from a fast-growing brain tumor that is nearly always fatal. This tumor, called “glioblastoma,” has so far resisted treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
Dr. Jain has discovered a way to create a “window of opportunity” through which treatments can enter. The tumor not only shrinks from lack of nourishment; the re-balanced environment also helps treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation to work more efficiently. Dr. Jain and his team are now starting Phase III trials in hopes that they will soon bring this discovery from the laboratory bench to patients’ bedsides.
